Oscar Gowns.

Did everyone enjoy the Oscars last night? I thought Jon Stewart did a good job and was also happy that the show even ended a bit early! My best dressed picks for the night? Katherine Heigl in Escada and Jennifer Garner in Oscar de la Renta. But there were really tons of gorgeous dresses and jewels! But did it seem to anyone that a lot of Hollywood’s elite actresses were MIA? Reese, Julia, Kate, Scarlett, Rachel? I always love seeing their fabulous choices as well. Anyway, who are your favorites of the night?

Cute, cheap sandals!

oldnavysandals.jpgContinuing my search for affordable yet fashionable summer footwear, I spied tons of stylish sandals at Old Navy. Some of my favorites are the metallic, flat options like the Beaded Flip Flops for $19.50 and the Metallic Braided Sandals for $16.50. They have as many colors of everyday flip flops as the rainbow at only $5 a pair and even a selection of wedges if you need some added height. Buying a few pairs at cheap prices is a good choice for me since I tend to beat up my summer shoes in the long, hot Phoenix climate. It never fails that I ruin a pair of chic, expensive shoes every summer and then forget to mend my ways the next year. It’s time I remember to save my special warm weather sandals from abuse and invest a little cash in footwear that won’t make me cry if it gets scuffed, worn or beat up. I’m making a trip to Old Navy this weekend!

Spring Trends.

vstop.jpgIs anyone else kind of bored with the forcasted Spring 2008 trends in fashion? I’ve browsed through the usual style mags and it just seems like nothing new this year. Safari, floral, goddess, global, trenchcoats, blazers, blah. There’s nothing that really grabs my attention or strikes me as unique or fresh. Not that I hate all those trends or anything, I was just looking for something that hadn’t been done a million times or something so awful that it would stir up a little controversy. My favorite trend has to be the continuation of bright colors. I love brights, especially in accessories and tops, and I’m happy to see the punchy corals, electric blues and saturated yellows are still a go for this upcoming season. This Ralph Lauren Black Label dress is gorgeous, but extremely expensive and my life isn’t so fabulous that I’d have a ton of places to wear it! However, re-interpreting the things I love about the dress into an affordable beachy top is totally doable. This floaty, bright yellow babydoll bra top from Victoria’s Secret can be worn as a halter (like the dress) or as a tube top as well. It’s only $38 and makes me want to leave for the beaches of San Diego right now! I just have to be patient until May! Do you have any spring trends you’re looking forward to or ready to retire?

Sandal hunting.

sandals.jpgSpring is around the corner and in my neck of the woods will be here sooner rather than later (no matter what Punxsutawney Phil says.) I am in dire need of cute, semi comfortable sandals this year. Mine are mostly worn to disrepair and have major injuries. Plus with my ever growing pregnant belly, I’ll need to consider that sacrificing comfort over style may not be worth it this time. First question, does any body actually like these gladiator type sandals? I for one think they are tragic. I mean, love the movie but I don’t necessarily want to recreate it on my feet. If they are your thing though, these are from Nine West and cost $80. Much more my style, I like this dressier version of the standard flip flop, the ‘Sannibel’ sandal from Steve Madden. I love the gold chain accent, the flat heel means it won’t kill your feet and the price is affordable at $56. Plus it comes in about 5 different color options! Anyone find any good sandals out there lately? Share!

They’re baaaack!

And it would have been sooner but yesterday my WordPress program was being funky and I ended up having to reinstall it. Anyway, hope you enjoy the return of Weekly Shopping Picks! This week’s theme is all about the orange. Yesterday was a gloomy, rainy day here in the desert and I needed a dose of bright color to cheer me up. On top of that, I wasn’t feeling well, food didn’t taste good and I really overdid it with yard work over the weekend. But today is a new day! The sun is shining, I just ate a Pop Tart and I’m leaving in a bit to go vote for my boyfriend, Barack. Have a great day everyone!

Swingin’ memories.

reddress.jpgWhen I was in college in the late 90s, the 1940s style made a huge comeback and I was smitten. I have always been a fan of the movies, music and glamorous fashions of that era, so it’s no surprise that when it became trendy, I jumped right in and started swing dancing. A little club (that sadly no longer exists) right next to the Arizona State campus had weekly swing nights with lessons and live acts; it was a blast! Seeing this adorable red dress from Anthropologie takes me back to that time when I got to live my own ‘Swing Kids’ dreams and pretend for a little bit that life was all about the dancing. Seriously, if you’ve never seen that movie, please rent it! Not only does it star my since childhood crush of Christian Bale but it is entertaining and touching. Anyway, I only wish dresses as pretty as this were available back in my college days! Instead, I spent hours searching through the nearby vintage store for 40s dresses, only to be shocked how much dress sizes have changed since then. A size 10 now fits like a size 6 then, crazy. I love everything about this dress and I’m picturing how with accessories you could recreate that throwback style or modernize it for today. Gorgeous!

Jumping back into the GAP.

gapgreen.jpgSo my mom and I went browsing around a bit yesterday and found ourselves at the Casa Paloma area where they have some cute shops and one super huge women’s clothing only GAP store. I have been down on GAP for awhile now, it just seemed like the clothes were so blah and boring for the past few years. Did you feel the same? Anyway, I was surprised when I found lots of cute casual tops which unfortunately I cannot buy since I will only get bigger for the next 7 months. Luckily, I checked online and they have some affordable, stylish maternity clothes too! Anyway, here are my faves from the new Spring line from GAP in my favorite color of kelly green: The ruffle polo, the half ribbed empire henley, and the 3/4 sleeve trapeze top. I’m looking forward to sunny, happy styles again and these could even work now with a jacket!

Holiday roundup

How was Christmas for all of you who celebrated this year? We had an amazing time with both sides of the family and got to spend some time with my brother and sister-in-law from West Africa, which was wonderful. We had Mexican food at the in-laws, Scandinavian food at my parents, and lots of little desserts too! Adrian and I open our presents to each other at our home on Christmas Eve before all the family time begins. It’s our own little tradition (and it involves chocolate croissants for breakfast, yum!) He did such a great job, I was so impressed! Plus, I think all the hints I drop on this blog are helpful. Adrian gave me the silver Gara Danielle cuff bracelet, a pair of silver double round hoops from Viv & Ingrid, L.A.M.B. perfume and gray cashmere slippers from Banana Republic. The slippers are divine and there are still a few left on sale on their website. I hope you all had a special time over the holidays like I did! All that’s left is New Years and the small party we’re having at our place, I can’t wait to usher in 2008!

Baking time has arrived.

cupcakeshirt.jpgI’m on my way to my mom’s for an all night baking party. We are going to bake like crazy ladies in our cute aprons and watch our favorite winter time movie, “Little Women,” starring my all time favorite actor/childhood crush Christian Bale. It should be a great night! As you all know, my serious baking addiction is now mostly directed at cupcakes. I am always on the prowl for cupcake related items that aren’t too cutesy and I love the merchandise at Johnny Cupcakes. I seriously need to add this tee to my Christmas list! Love it! Have a good night and I’ll update you on all the treats we make tomorrow!
